Probiotics Provide A Wide Range Of Healthy Benefits

To the average person in the world, the very mention of the word “bacteria” conjures up images of germs swirling and swimming throughout the body causing everything from a little digestive comfort to downright life-threatening illnesses.

Do bacteria deserve such a reputation? Not really, because there are “good” bacteria that, when properly present or introduced into the body, provide protection, promoting those necessary elements needed for a healthy living.

Probiotics are found, naturally, in many foods, particularly fermented and cultured ones. Items like sauerkraut and yogurt have been important staples in many world cultures helping provide for healthier living.

Unfortunately, modern science – and a modern-day lifestyle – has become the enemy of the naturally occurring “good” bacteria prompting recent research into the benefits of probiotics as part of the daily diet. This research suggests that inclusion of probiotics benefits the body, not only helping to maintain an important chemical balance, but also prevent some illnesses from happening.

This research, conducted extensively in the 1990s, has discovered a wide variety of probiotics benefits including warding off a number of gastrointestinal ailments, preventing the development of childhood allergies as well as the prevention of several vaginal and urinary tract infections suffered by women.

Clinical trials have uncovered that the daily introduction of billions of helpful living organisms can even reduce, if not eliminate, the occurrence of diarrhea, a common side effect of antibiotic therapy used for children and infants. Other clinical trials have produced positive results that probiotics therapy can fight Chiron’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Also, clinical trials examining probiotics benefits are being conducted concerning ulcerative colitis and the prevention of certain types of complications resulting from surgery to correct the situation.

Since there are more than 500 million different strains of bacteria present in the body, a great deal of additional research is necessary trying to discover what helpful organisms prevent illnesses and aid the body’s immune system. An encouraging discovery from recent research centers on probiotics health benefits in women’s urogenital health.

A woman’s vaginal system needs a finely tuned balance to maintain good health. However, this system can easily become unbalanced by a number of modern-day elements such as birth control pills, spermicides and use of antibiotics. It has been discovered that dominant strains of a bacteria called Lactobacelli will help fight off those nasty bacteria causing many vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection and urinary tract infection.

Although a change in eating habits for Westerners may help develop a greater natural introduction of helpful, health promoting probiotics, daily supplement doses may be the more practical approach. Asian cultures have had a long-standing history providing inclusion of probiotics in food selections, but the Westernization process in these lands has led to a billion-dollar industry that has created probiotics-laced beverages. These beverages vary based on the types of organisms present and what these bacteria are considered to affect when introduced into the body. Since there are so many bacteria strains that have different effects, it is important to do your research or consult a qualified expert.

Additionally, always consult a physician before changing your diet or introducing any supplement.
